Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH) in Little Rock is mourning the passing of Dr. Betty Lowe.

The former pediatrician died Tuesday night at UAMS. She was 78.

Dr. Lowe retired in 2001 after more than 25 years of service at ACH.

ACH shared the following details about Dr. Lowe's career:
Dr. Lowe, who played a major role in the effort to make ACH a leader in pediatric medical care, was appointed to the joint position of director of Pediatric Education at ACH and professor of pediatrics at UAMS in June 1975. In May 1976, Dr. Lowe was named medical director of ACH.

"It is a very sad day for us here at Arkansas Children's Hospital," said ACH President and CEO Dr. Jonathan Bates. "On behalf of all of us here at ACH, we will be eternally grateful to Dr. Lowe, who dedicated her life to the service of the children of Arkansas and to the education of those who serve them. She was their advocate, healer and friend. In fact, she was a friend to us all. I cannot imagine ACH without Dr. Lowe, but her spirit permeates everything we do."

Dr. Lowe also served as president of the American Academy of Pediatrics between 1993 and 1994, after holding the position of vice president the previous year. She was elected to the national leadership post by the entire academy, becoming the first Arkansas pediatrician to serve as both AAP district chair and president.
