Advanced Lense Gives Patients with Astigmatism New Look on Life

There is a new discovery in restoring sight through an innovative eye treatment at UAMS.
Sharon Kemp enjoys being the voice behind Fresh Talk Radio 93.3, but what's even better?
A fresh set of eyes.
"She was saying, 'I want you to focus on the clock.' I said, 'Dr. Kim, that's why I'm here. I can't see the wall,'" Kemp says.
Kemp says she had a severe case of nearsightedness and astigmatism.
"She refracted my eyes so I could get glasses," Kemp says. "Cataracts ran in my family, so she was also watching those and when it was time to change them she said, 'oh by the way we have new lenses now.'"
Kemp is referring to Dr. Nicola Kim, an Opthamologist at UAMS Jones Eye Institute.
A lense called a toric lense can now be used by people with astigmatism and while you are having cataract surgery.
"I can do two things at once that I used to have to do with separate procedures," says Dr. Kim.
And it gives the patient increased visual results.
"Now it comes in a higher range of astigmatism, they keep increasing it, because it's so successful," Dr. Kim says.
"And for someone who has been nearsighted since I was a child, it was a miracle," Kemp rejoices.
