By: Newsroom Solutions
Updated: June 30, 2011
While the 2012 presidential election is more than a year and half away, the green flag has dropped on the race for the Republican nomination.

Five potential candidates took part in a forum in Iowa last night, sponsored by the Iowa chapter of the Faith & Freedom Coalition.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is yet to officially announce his candidacy, said regardless of who wins the GOP nomination, the party needs to be unified.

Along with Gingrich, former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, former Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum and former Godfathers Pizza CEO Herman Cain spoke at the gathering.

The intentions of former Arkansas governor and 2008 GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee have not yet been made known for the 2012 race.
