SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois republicans are going after House Speaker Mike Madigan. They're launching a new campaign in hopes of swaying voters this November.

Experts don't think the "Fire Madigan" campaign will make much of a difference. UIS Political Science Professor Chris Mooney says the ads might help secure a few seats for the GOP, but only time will tell.

The campaign even has its own website where people can buy apparel that sports the slogan.

Madigan's spokesman, Steve Brown, says the republicans try these tactics every year and they never work.

"They have failed before. And it has the signs of being a failed effort again," he said during a phone interview. "They can hurl the insults, which they're pretty good at, but they don't have alternative ideas and they don't have a record of accomplishment."

The campaign is even gaining momentum at the Republican National Convention. Leaders there were discussing it during breakfast on Monday.
