LITTLE ROCK, AR - Arkansas police officers and firefighters put their lives on the line every day.  Now, they're asking legislators at the state capitol for help, particularly in dealing with the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Police and fire currently have to use their own private insurance on their own off time for treatment for PTSD-related symptoms. But on Wednesday, a Senate committee made the move to change that.

A bill from northwest Arkansas Senator Jon Woods will allow PTSD to be covered under workers compensation. Firefighters testified that without treatment, many firefighters and police officers simply walk away from the profession and get on disability. That puts a strain on taxpayer financed public retirement funds.

The Municipal League, which represents city governments, said it's a good idea in concept, but there's no way to know how much providing PTSD coverage will cost cities around the state.

The committee moved it up, where the full Senate will take it up Thursday
