Got Work? Legislature Adjourns For 4-Day Weekend

It takes a lot of effort to get 40 million pounds of train rolling.

The state legislature is no different, with 135 lawmakers considering more than 200 bills, and spending $5 billion of state money.

So things are moving slowly now, says House Speaker Davy Carter, but this train is picking up speed.

"I'm pretty sure we'll have a busy week next week and then the next for sure," Carter said. "These things will start happening pretty quickly."

Next week, lawmakers will likely tackle gun bills, anti-abortion bills, and bills dealing with charter schools and school transfers.

Then there's the grandaddy of them all: Medicaid.

The Department of Human Services and UAMS are pushing hard for expansion, but the Arkansas House Republican Caucus says dealing with next year's Medicaid shortfall should be the priority.

Once this train gets going, Carter says it will be full tilt until the end of the session.
