By: Jocelyn Tovar, KARK 4 NEWS
Updated: January 22, 2013

The non-profit Autism Resource and Outreach Center is holding a contest to help raise awareness of Autism.

Local advocate, Diane Varaday, said other states have held similar contests in the past.

Varaday said if you would like to participate simply download a templete here.

The top ten best designs will be displayed during "Zoo Day" on April 20th.

And a winner will then be selected in June.

Hello Kim. There are lots of organizations out there that ask for donations, and I'm not sure what kind of experience you've had with any/all of them, but the AAROC does help families in Arkansas every day (and with very little money). We are a local state-based non-profit, and our mission is to help families in Arkansas access the care their child needs. We work with families on insurance/Medicaid issues, special education issues, and issues that arise as a child transitions to adulthood. We do raise money to support our organization, but every dime raised stays in Arkansas and goes to help Arkansas families find the resources they need. We also sponsor family fun days (like AAROC Zoo Day), where we sponsor activities that are free for our families. The license plate contest is free to enter and doesn't require a donation at all. Rather than petitioning for a license plate with our logo on it, our organization wanted to give people in Arkansas the opportunity to submit their own designs for an autism awareness plate and choose from the designs that are submitted. If you haven't heard of our organization, please take a minute and go to our website: www.aaroc.org, and if you know a family that needs help, please encourage them to contact us. -Dianna V.

I applaud your effort to raise awareness of autism, but has it dawned on you all just once to shed awareness on how to get help for a child with autism, instead of telling us constantly how we can donate? Just a thought?
