According to the White County Sheriff's Office, a detective was traveling west on Rocky Point Road when a 1993 Buick Century that had been reported stolen crossed the center line and struck the detective's truck.
The Buick went into a nearby yard where it became disabled, and 40-year-old Jerry Wayne Smith II jumped out and began to run away.
When the detective tried to stop him, Smith threatened him with a pocket knife until the detective drew his duty weapon, at which point Smith dropped the knife and ran to a red truck that had stopped after the accident occurred.
Smith then attempted to pull the driver of that truck out, but was unable to due to his seat belt.
He still tried to drive away in the red truck, but the detective fired shots into the front driver's side tire. Smith then ran farther down the road and attempted to force another driver out of their vehicle.
At this point, the detective was able to force Smith to the ground before getting him into custody.
The detective sustained minor injuries from the accident and was treated at the White County Medical Center.
Smith was transported to the White County Medical Center for injuries sustained from the accident then booked into the White County Detention Center for aggravated robbery and second-degree battery.
His bond was set at $100,000, but possibly faces more charges in the near future, according to the Sheriff's Office.
