Law Enforcement Agencies Want Phone Companies to Store Data for Longer

Law enforcement agencies in Arkansas are pushing for better access to phone records, including texts, to solve cases.
The National Sheriff's Association, which includes Arkansas, is asking congress to reform the Electronic Communications Privacy Act.
Investigators want service providers like Sprint and AT&T to hand over text and call records faster and store information, such as texts, longer.
"It would be valuable to us, but you have to weigh that against people's right as well," says Lt. Carl Minden with Pulaski County Sheriff's Office. "We'll leave that to legislators."
Critics say the act, which was passed more than 25 years ago, is outdated.
