Many are turning on heaters for the first time this year, and that can mean more fire safety concerns.

Firefighters putting on safety demonstrations Saturday afternoon said they see an increase in house fires this time of the year.

That's why they recomend taking steps like cleaning out your fireplaces, or even getting a professional to clean them before winter is officially here.

"Also, if you use electrical heaters, make sure they're four feet away from combustibles like curtains," said Chief Fire Marshal Joe Gray, "And make sure you turn them off if you leave home."

Firefighters told us they just want everyone to be safe during the cold weather.
