Maumelle High School has a new principal.

The Pulaski County Special School District (PCSSD) has named Rebecca Guthrie to the post for the 900-student campus.

She replaces Dr. Tamekia Brown who has assumed the principal position at Central Junior High School in Springdale.

Since 2008, Guthrie has been the principal of Van Buren High School. From 2006 to 2008 she served as principal of Coleman Junior School in the Van Buren Public School District. She was the high school principal for Lincoln high School in the Lincoln Consolidated School District and the assistant high school principal for the Lonoke Public School District, both in Arkansas.

Guthrie began her career in 1984 as a teacher in the Cross County Public School District in Cherry Valley, where she taught special education and developed and taught the first high school gifted and talented program.

She holds her Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE) in Special and Elementary Education and a Master of Science in Education in Secondary Administration (MSE) from Arkansas State University.

Dr. Linda Remele, PCSSD's deputy superintendent, said Guthrie is an excellent choice to lead the district's newest and largest high school. "We're proud to have recruited someone of Ms. Guthrie's caliber and expect good things for Maumelle High School in the coming school year," she said.

Remele said Guthrie will assume her duties on July 1st.

Guthrie said she plans to move from Van Buren to Maumelle as soon as possible with her husband, Mike, and their 11-year-old twins who will enter seventh grade at Maumelle Middle School.

The Pulaski County School District is the third-largest school district in the state with about 17,000 students.
