Morrilton Police said, while you can never fully prevent accidents, there are ways departments try and keep their officers safe while they're on the streets.

"It's always best to have an additional officer on the scene to watch your back," said Sergeant Trent Anderson. "We all try and pull together as a big family. "

The Morrilton Police Department is only twenty minutes from Conway and Sergeant Anderson said this accident hit close to home.

"We try and do anything we can to keep it from happening," he said.

Anderson said safety is on the minds of officers before they even step out of their car while working an accident by where they decide to park their vehicles.

"That's the first decision they have to make when they pull up," he said.

This however becomes difficult when you consider accidents happen in all different areas with all kinds of terrain.

"There's always going to be that factor that nobody can see coming," he said.

While some of the causes are unforeseeable, helping to prevent them can seem relatively obvious.

Mandatory traffic vests are worn by every officer to make it clear where they stand.

"I don't know if it's the law or not but it's our policy," he said.

He added everyone working dangerous scenes are looking out for one another, "Because we want everyone to come home at night."

Sergeant Anderson said informing the public is one of the best ways to prevent accidents and people should pay attention if there are officers at a scene. Also he said to remember to switch to the furthest lane if possible because it's the law.
