The Impact of Diabetes in Arkansas

Diabetes is a major health concern in Arkansas, affecting an estimated 372,000 adults in 2008, with 248,000 diagnosed with the disease and 124,000 undiagnosed and untreated.

The prevalence of diabetes in Arkansas has been at or above the national average for the last 15 years, with a 44 percent increase in prevalence from 1999 to 2008. Tied with two other states, Arkansas ranked 12th highest in diagnosed diabetes.

In Arkansas, the prevalence rate of diabetes was 22% higher in blacks compared to whites in 2008. In 2006, diabetes was the sixth leading cause of death in Arkansas and the fourth leading cause of death among blacks. Diabetes is 21% more prevalent among males than females in the state.

In 2007, 5,866 diabetes-related hospitalizations were reported in Arkansas, resulting in an estimated $100 million in hospital charges.

Among Arkansans with diabetes, in 2007, there were 738 lower extremity amputations, 1,724 hospitalizations for ketoacidosis and 419 hospitalizations for chronic end-stage renal disease.
