A pilot program is helping Arkansas students get ready for college. The Department of Higher Education says 40% of incoming freshmen need remediation, but students in the Bearden District have been taking college remediation classes for high school credit.

Higher Education Director Shane Broadway says it saves students and taxpayers the cost of taking remediation classes in college.

"We know through all the data we have, the chances of a student graduating go up exponentially, if they're been remediated before they go to college," Broadway says.

The pilot program now goes to public comment before it can be approved for all Arkansas students.
