Summer Feeding Sites Announced by Arkansas Food Pantries

Updated: May 15, 2012
Some Arkansas children who normally get breakfast and lunch at school will still get those meals over the summer.

The Arkansas Foodbank, the largest food bank in Arkansas, will participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Summer Food Service Program this summer by sponsoring five Summer Feeding sites.

The sites will serve two meals per day (breakfast and lunch) from June 11 to August 20.

Breakfast will be served from 8:30-10:00am and lunch will be served from noon-1:30pm, Monday through Friday. All meals will be provided at no cost.

Participating sites will be:
  • Billy Mitchell Boys and Girls Club, 3107 West 5th Street, Little Rock
  • Thrasher Boys and Girls Club, 3301 State Street, Little Rock
  • Penick Boys and Girls Club, 1201 Leisure Place, Little Rock
  • Dalton Whetstone Boys and Girls Club, 46 Harrow Drive, Little Rock
  • Boys and Girls Club in Benton
All of the locations will be open sites, which means that children not enrolled in the Boys and Girls Club may eat breakfast and lunch at the sites without having to be enrolled at the club. Children should not be dropped off at the sites if they are not members.  If parents would like for their children to become members and participate in activities at the Boys and Girls Clubs, they must request an enrollment application and pay any enrollment fees.

The program is designed to replace free and reduced-price lunches that the children would normally get at school after classes have dismissed for the summer.

Arkansas Rice Depot also has a program to feed school children during the summer and all-year round.

Foods 4 Kids (click here for more info) meets the needs of Arkansas students, grades K-12, who display educational, physical, or emotional problems at school due to hunger at home.

Food For Kids does this by providing backpacks filled with kid-friendly, nourishing food, that students can take home with them at night and on weekends. During the last school year Food For Kids served more than 32,000 students across Arkansas and currently serves more than 650 schools.

This program does not stop when school ends for the summer. During the summer Food For Kids works closely with program coordinators throughout Arkansas, to make arrangements with schools to ensure that those in need are still able to receive food-filled backpacks. The Rice Depot says while not all schools are able to participate, there are many that choose to do so.
