The man accused of running over a teenager in May pleaded not guilty Monday in court.
Original Story:
Bond is set at one-million-dollars for a Little Rock van driver accused of running down a teenaged boy on a bicycle.
Michael Sadler, Sr., 58, was arrested Thursday after the incident that began along Asher Avenue when the man's wallet was stolen.
According to police documents released today, Sadler drove his Dodge Caravan after Michael Stanley, 14, through the yards of several homes before running over the boy and his bike near 27th & Oak streets.
Before police arrived, two city code enforcement officers reported Sadler got out of the van and began hitting and kicking the boy after he had been runover. The officers said they had to pull Sadler off the boy. Several witnesses also reported seeing Sadler go after the boy when he was on the ground.
When police arrived on the scene Thursday, Sadler told them "the boy stole my wallet with $1,300 in it and he was with another boy!," according to the incident report.
The report says further that while being interviewed by police, Sadler told them he saw Stanley and another boy behind a store at Asher & Maple and asked them to help him find a man that had stolen a gun from him earlier in the day. He pulled out his wallet containing $1,300 and offered them money for helping him find the man. Sadler said at that point, one of the boys reached into his van and grabbed his wallet and the boys took off on their bicycles. Sadler said he chased after them and they split up. Sadler told officers during the chase he bumped Stanley's bike and then felt a "bump" after which he stopped the van and got out. He said he then picked Stanley up by his clothing, hit him in the face, moved him with his foot, and kept yelling at him to give his money back.
The man said he didn't intentionally hurt the boy, he just wanted his money back.
Stanley died less than an hour after being rushed to Children's Hospital.
Sadler is charged with first degree murder.
Police say they have surveillance video from the store showing the boys next to Sadler's van before they take off on their bikes and Sadler drives after them.
