Update: Former Hampton Police Chief Turns Himself in after Charges Filed

Update (March 29):
HAMPTON, AR - We now know why the former Chief of Police in Hampton was fired earlier this month.

Jeff Jackson has turned himself at the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office after being charged with 2 counts of furnishing firearms to a felon.

Prosecutors say while Jackson was serving as police chief, he gave a work release inmate a pistol and a rifle to clean and repair.

By law, felons are not allowed to have access to any weapons.

Jackson is currently out of jail on a signature bond.

There's no word yet on when he will make his first court appearance.

Update (March 19):

HAMPTON, AR - We now know why Hampton (Calhoun County) is looking for a new police chief.

Mayor Rick Shiron says that Jeff Jackson was let go earlier this month, but can't say why.

He does say that Jackson is currently being investigated by El Dorado prosecutors.

Meanwhile, Hampton will be accepting applications for police chief from now until April 20th.

HAMPTON, AR -- The City of Hampton is apparently looking for a new police chief.

On its Facebook page, the city has posted that its seeking qualified applicants for the position of Chief of Police.

City officials have not responded to questions about whether current Chief Jeff Jackson has been fired or stepped down from his position.

In February, Jackson was suspended with pay by Mayor Rick Shiron.

The mayor said Chief Jackson was being investigated by Arkansas State Police.

Interested applicants are asked to call (870) 798-2753 for a complete job description and an application or mail a resume to City of Hampton, Attn: Mayor, P.O. Box 783, Hampton, AR 71744.
