Driver's Identity Released in I40 Crash; Repairs Continue

By: Hubert Tate

LITTLE ROCK, AR -- 55-year-old Ahmed Salahuddin, of Maryland, is the person Arkansas crash investigators say collided with an Interstate 40 overpass Thursday.

The crash caused the west bound lanes to be shut down for five hours, causing major damages to the support system. Friday, crews started installing ratchet jacks to help support the weight of the overpass.

Crews completed repairs Saturday.

"We're talking concrete here. You wouldn't expect fire would have an impact on concrete, but if you get it hot enough, there is quite a bit of damage out there," said Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department spokesman Danny Straessle.

The current repairs are only a temporary fix. Engineers say they will begin to do research on what to do permanently Monday.
