Three Bills Restricting Abortion Advance

Republicans flexed their muscle at the State Capitol Thursday.

Lawmakers advanced three bills limiting abortions, all in less than one hour. All the measures received some Democratic support. One was even sponsored by a Democrat. But many say it was the shift of the balance of power in the last election that made the difference.

Representative Andy Mayberry has testified in front of the Public Health Committee before. In 2011, the East End lawmaker pitched The Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act before the body. He did it again Thursday.

"There's nothing different about the legislation," Mayberry said. "It's the exact same piece of legislation."

Mayberry also brought the same expert witness and showed the same video in the same presentation he gave in 2011 (highlighted by his wife, Julie Mayberry, who told how the birth of their daughter with spina bifida changed her views on abortion).

But this time was different. The committee passed Mayberry's bill on a voice vote, sending HB137 to the full House.

"Today was that first hurdle, we crossed it," Mayberry said afterward.

But Mayberry's bill didn't go unopposed. House Minority Leader Greg Leding says the measure banning abortions after 20 weeks was too restrictive.

"The (restrictive) exception for the health of the mother; the lack of exemption for rape and incest; the lack of exemption for serious fetal anomalies of the child," Leding said, citing issues with the bill.

I am the sixty year old mother of two adopted children, one birth child and grandmother of three. I have been in nursing as a student and nurse practitioner for 42 years. So, my husband and I are a part of the answer for unplanned and perhaps unwanted pregnancies. I am challenging/encouraging all who claim to be pro choice to watch this short video on the products of abortion. People need to know what first trimester abortion really looks like. The pictures you see will be as appalling and heartbreaking as any pictures of the victims of the Holocost. As those were finally seen by the world at the end of World War II, anyone with a conscience was mortified and overwhelmed that one human could inflict those inhumane acts against another. Yet, we, as a nation, have committed over 5 times as many violent deadly acts against tiny victims unable to protect themselves. Let me make one thing perfectly clear, there are some occasions where a pregnancy has to be terminated or the mother and baby will die, such as a tubal pregnancy or an abruptio placenta(the placenta releases from the uterine lining before birth causing hemorrhage). In those situations both will die if nothing is done. I believe anyone who is pro choice will have their mind changed or else they have no conscience after watching this short video. I have never met a woman who was glad she had an abortion. I also know God is merciful and forgiving for those who ask and is able to heal the broken hearted.
