The Pulaski County Jail has been working to increase the number of beds it has after a study done by the University of Arkansas Little Rock showed there was a need for at least 1,500 beds to accommodate inmates.

The goal is to keep repeat offenders in jail a longer period of time.

Now, there is a new addition that will house 240 non-violent inmates.

There are new bunks, eating, exercise and visiting areas.

Sheriff Doc Holladay said a bigger jail translates into a safer community.

"If we can keep more of those non-violent felons for longer periods of time in this facility, our hope is we will reduce the crime rate in our city and in the county."

The entire addition cost $3,900,000.

Little Rock, North Little Rock, Maumelle, Sherwood and Jacksonville will pay two-thirds of the cost.

Counties will pick up the rest.

The new wing will see its first inmates come Thanksgiving Day.
