2012 Arkansas Race for the Cure Set for October 20

In just two months, runners and walkers will lace up their shows for the 2012 Susan G. Komen Arkansas Race for the Cure.
It's set for October 20 in downtown Little Rock and North Little Rock.
The goal is to raise $2.1 million for breast cancer research, education, screenings and treatments.
Today, breast cancer survivors, volunteers, and community leaders gathered in the future home of the 2012 Race Space, at the Pleasant Ridge Town Center, to announce race details.
The Arkansas Race for the Cure is one of the largest Komen events, ranking in the top five for attendance in the country, according to 2012 Race Chair Kristi Moody. Last year's Race attracted 45,000 participants, which included survivors and their supporters, team members and more than 2,800 Three Miles of Men participants lining the course.
"The 2011 Race raised over $2 million, allowing the Arkansas Affiliate to award $1.25 million in grants for breast cancer education programs, screenings and treatments in Arkansas," Moody said. "$480,000 supported national research to find better treatments, medicines, and developments for a cure."
This year's Race theme "Run as One" encourages everyone to pull together as one unit to fight the disease.
A number of Race options have been added since Arkansas' first Race in 1994 to appeal to anyone wishing to support the cause.
One of them is the McDonald's and KARK 5K Run/Walk begins at 8 a.m. at 2nd and Broadway and ends at Capitol and Gaines streets. The competitive 5K run is offered with a start time of 7:30 a.m. The runners must be able to complete the course in 30 minutes or less and will pay a slightly increased registration fee of $30 and will be chip timed.
Lining the course, husbands, sons, brothers and other male supporters can cheer race participants by registering for Three Miles of Men. Honorary Three Miles of Men Chairs, Anthony Lucas and Clint Stoerner, encourage all men to support this cause by being there on race day and by being heroes to the women in their life and encouraging them to get their mammograms. For $26, registrants will receive a T-shirt, invitation to the Tailgate Party from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct.5 at Diamond Bear Brewery and breakfast at the race day tent on the corner of Capitol and Izard streets.
On Oct. 19, the Pasta Party, will begin at 5:30 p.m. in North Little Rock at Dickey-Stephens Park. For $25, attendees will be able to enjoy a great meal and music by The Rockets.
The Verizon Race Space to include the Shop for the Cure Boutique will be open Oct. 5 through Oct. 19 at the Pleasant Ridge Town Center (11525 Cantrell Road). Hours will be weekdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 12 to 6 p.m.
On race day, the Survivor Breakfast, will begin at 6:30 a.m. at Metropolitan Plaza (corner of Capitol and Broadway) for breast cancer survivors. At 9:30 a.m. family, friends and race participants are encouraged to line the parade route on Broadway between 2nd and 4th for the "Sea of Pink" Survivor Parade.
Ashlee Stephens, 2012 Honorary Survivor, expressed her agreement with this year's theme Run As One. "The race gives me a positive and uplifting feeling when I observe over 45,000 folks join together to support this cause - a cause that is so close to my heart."
The top three overall winners of the race and the top three survivor winners will be presented with awards. The first place survivor of the Competitive 5K will also receive one roundtrip airline ticket on American Airlines or American Eagle to any destination in the contiguous U.S. Komen Race for the Cure. Medals will be presented to the first 300 finishers of the competitive 5K Run.
Immediately following the ceremony, survivors are encouraged to go to Robinson Center for the Survivor Luncheon. The informal event is free for survivors registered for the race and $15 for all other guests.
On-street parking will be available outside the race course perimeter. Carpooling is encouraged. No parking will be allowed along the race route. A survivor parking lot (entry with survivor shirt or bib) will be located in the Metropolitan National Bank parking garage, but space is limited.
Another exciting event this year is the Kids for the Cure carnival area on race day. Kids will have an opportunity to play games and win prizes. There is also a special Kids for the Cure t-shirt, designed by 11-year-old Eden McCormack of Little Rock.
The fitness training program, Train for the Cure, designed to help participants reach their fitness goals, will be held online only this year. Registration is available online (click here).
