Logan Prescott, 17, of Rison, died at the scene of the crash along Arkansas 133 about 8 miles north of Rison. Two of his teammates were injured, along with the driver of another car.
The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) says Prescott and Justin Ross, 17, were riding in a Honda Civic driven by Josh Cook, also 17, headed south when they tried to pass a car (on a hill, according to the Arkansas State Police accident report) and did not see an oncoming vehicle in the northbound lane. The two cars collided at the crest of the hill, sending both into a roadside ditch along the northbound lane.
Lee Applegarth, 63, of Poyen was driving the other vehicle, a 1960s model convertible. He is in critical condition. The conditions of Cook and Ross are not known.
The CCSO says Applegarth had to be removed from his car by rescuers and Ross had to be cut out of the Honda by the Rison Fire Department using the jaws of life.
According to the accident report from the Arkansas State Police, none of the injured had been wearing seat belts.
Cook and Applegarth, were taken by ambulance to Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. Emergency personnel worked to stabilize Ross before a Baptist Health medical helicopter was called in airlift him to the hospital in Little Rock.
A source tells KARK 4 News that Prescott's funeral is set for 10 o'clock Friday morning at Bethel No. 1 Missionary Baptist Church at Rison. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Buie Funeral Home in Rison.
