FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Nick Schmidt added to his long list of honors on Tuesday when the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) named the Arkansas left-hander the Pro-Line Cap National Pitcher of the Week. The sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., quickly displaced any notion of a sophomore jinx in his season debut against perennial power Oklahoma State at the Jaguar Invitational in Mobile, Ala. Schmidt started and pitched the first six innings of the 12th no-hitter in school history. He struck out six and walked three on 87 pitches. It was the first time in 71 years of recorded baseball at Oklahoma State that the Cowboys had been held without a hit in a nine-inning game. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference and names the winners on every Tuesday throughout the season. Rices Aaron Luna was chosen as the Pro-Line Cap National Hitter of the Week. Luna opened his collegiate career by hitting home runs in his first three at bats. He had four home runs for the week with nine RBI and seven runs scored. With the weeks honor, Schmidt was also added to the watch list for the Roger Clemens Award, given annually to the national collegiate pitcher of the year. Arkansas will return to the diamond on Friday at 1 p.m. against No. 18 TCU in Edinburg, Texas. The Hogs will face Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at 1 p.m. and then take on host Texas-Pan American on Sunday at 2 p.m.
