Bortis Advances to Missouri Amateur Quarterfinals

UA Sports Information- Friday, June 24, 2005 --- SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Arkansas sophomore golfer Matt Bortis continued his run through the Missouri Amateur Championships on Friday at the Millwood Golf and Racquet Club. The Springfield, Mo., native defeated Rich Gleghorn in the second round of match play 3 & 2 and then came back in the round of 16 to eliminate Donald Bliss 1 up. The wins advance the No. 1-seeded Bortis into Saturday mornings quarterfinal match with John Kelly of St. Louis. The winner of the morning match will the play a semifinal match on Saturday afternoon. The finals are slated for 36 holes on Sunday. Bortis was the No. 1 seed entering match play after firing a 69 in the first round of qualifying on Monday and a 62 in the second round on Tuesday. The nine-under-par 131 set a new Missouri Amateur Championships 36-hole qualifying record. He defeated Connor McHenry 3 & 1 on Thursday in the first round of match-play action.
