Tornado Myths

 Tornado Myths:

Highway overpasses are safe for shelter…
Any place above ground puts you in danger. Getting under overpasses can block the flow of traffic. It can also create a tunneling effect, can allow wind to flow faster through a smaller corridor, and can create suction that allows more debris to blow through the area.

Open your windows during a tornado…
Opening a window to equalize pressure in a house is a faulty and dangerous idea that wastes time. Nothing can stop the power of one of nature’s most incredible forces from damaging a structure.

Tornadoes can’t cross where water meets, go over big hills and mountains, or go through big cities…

This has been proven to be false many times. On March1, 1997, a tornado crossed the junction of two rivers in Arkadelphia. Tornadoes have been documented traveling through the Arkansas Ozarks. Tornadoes have also struck through the heart of big cities, including St. Louis, Nashville, and Fort Worth.
