I know alot of people around here gaining access to the internet in one way or another. Unfortunately if you are one without any access to high speed you are not alone. High speed internet seems to be a last priority for any company around here considering a certain companies phone lines where I live can barely handle a 28.8kbps connection, much less a 56 kbps dialup connection or DSL. We are in a cell phone null zone and I have heard many horror stories from satellite especially if you need it for mission critical applications.
I know it's alot for internet but my wife and I have resorted to getting a T1 connection which for those of you that do know... you can buy a house for the price of it. We are planning on absorbing the cost by starting a business and leasing servers and selling various materials we come across on closeout. I considered setting up a rural wireless internet service provider but there is so much red tape involved in that frankly I don't have the time to work with it.
For those of you afraid of technology or don't think that high speed internet effects anyone please consider this article *.connectkentucky.org/
Anyways what does everyone else use and how are your experiences so that everyone else can know about the technology available in Arkansas.
Thanks,
Anthony |

I have DSL from AT&T. Have been very happy with it. We were one of the last exchanges (apparently it depends on the first three digits of your phone number) to get it in this area. Even houses across the street would have it and not certain exchanges.
Have a friend that has satellite service which he likes but he does lose service in heavy rain/thunderstorms like TV service. |

| Satellite should be the very last resort, and better hope you got the extra money to get it. Start up cost is nearly 250 bucks if you get there special. Plus you will pay around 100 a month for services that are in and out if you live in the woods and weather is very bad. Not worth the money if you ask me. The upstream is very slow, most are at 128kps up and if your lucky, you will get 256kbs down. There is a lag/delay in this system, so if your a gamer, than this is useless to you. ATT is very spotty where i live at, seems that it is base on your phone number and how far you are from the digtal server box. We are 42 feet from the end of the line. So we are stuck using cable from resort. If you dont have a contract with them, than your going to pay alot as well. They seem to bill you twice a month, and always bill you wrong. I know, because I did work for them, untill i refuse to do there dirty work. We are installers, not the collection agency. There is some wireless from canopy in hot springs, but that is limited to 128kps up and 256 down and will pay around 80 bucks a month for it. You have to live via Line of Site of the towers. If you live in a apt, got a laptop handy, might find some poor sole wireless router and get your internet that way. I got about 5 options where i live. Works great when it comes to download multi applications at the same time. |
