We started of the day rather nervous for New Orleans and family still in Louisiana. We end the day really breathing a bit of a sigh of relief for those we know but saddened by a few deaths one being in a young man in Lafayette who was killed when a tree fell on him.
My hometown Jennings was on the west end of the storm but my family never lost power and suffered no damage.
Of course the storm is not done but it did not turn out to be the monster that it could have been.
I cannot say enough kind words about the federal, state and local governments that worked together to manage the largest, smoothest evacuation in Louisiana's history. I am extremely impressed by Louisiana's current governor. I had heard good things about him and they are apparently true.

We were a bit nervous here on the Alabama Gulf Coast as well. I was so impressed with the way local law enforcement handled emergency preparation. Hurricanes are just a way of life here on the Gulf Coast. We've got people in office who understand, are informative, and have a plan in place. Gulf Shores suffered no damage, and the sun is peeking through the clouds today. Still dangerous surf conditions, but it looks like a beautiful day here.
We're sending good thoughts to our friends in LA, and hoping Arkansas suffers no ill effects from this storm passing through! |

Glad to hear Alabama was not hit hard & thanks for the kind words. We hope Mississippi faired okay, as well.
Arkansas suffered from some flooding and wind damage but it looks like the worst is over. To see photos click the following link .[/url]http://arkansasmatters.com/mymedia/cat.php?id=c13
Our family from Mandeville learned that their power was restored yesterday morning and many people headed back for Louisiana. They are waiting it out until the weather is completely clear and the traffic is a little lighter.
We certainly hope that Ike weakens and does not hit anyone on the east or Gulf Coast. |
