It's now easier than ever for Arkansans to decide to become organ donors. A new website, www.donatelifearkansas.org, allows you to register online, anytime.
Before now, the only way to become a donor was to register at the DMV when getting a new license.
That inconvenience, along with some myths about donating, might have kept some Arkansans away.
Now the Arkansas Regional Organ Recovery Agency, or ARORA, is breaking down the barriers to save lives.
The music and ice cream drew a crowd in little rock Wednesday, but the message was as serious as life and death.
Joshua Carlisle knows that first hand. In 2004, he received a heart transplant. "It's one of the greatest gifts I've ever received," said Carlisle.
The new website allows you to save a life with the click of your mouse. You are instantly added to the database of organ donors. Right now there are more than 100-thousand people across the country on the organ waiting list.
R & B group Club Nouveau's hit song "Rumors" provides the theme for this awareness campaign, which is aimed at smashing out myths about organ donation.
You can still register to be a donor at the DMV, but registering online is more thorough, because it allows the option to consent to also donate tissue and eyes.
"It might be a good idea to go ahead and reregister online, even if you're already registered with the DMV," said ARORA spokesperson Audrey Brown.
Your decision to register is legally binding, meaning your family can't reverse your decision. After your register on the website, you'll have the option to print a donor card or email your family to let them know you're a donor.
You might wonder how you'll be spotted as a donor, without the indication on your license. "Having it on the driver's license is nice for the person who is registered, but it's not necessary," said Brown. "We look directly in the database, not on those cards."
And the goal is to grow that database of donors. Carlisle said now Arkansans have no excuse not to register. "Look at me, I'm an organ recipient. I'm doing great. I'm doing awesome," said Carlisle. "I've got a second chance on life, because someone made that decision to give."
