Ideas for Your Mom

Treat Your Mom

Yes, you guessed it. It is that time of the year again. It’s Mother's Day, when we let our mothers know how much we appreciate them. ArkansasMatters.com and KARK 4 have put together some inexpensive ways to treat your mom this Mother's Day.

Cooking- Make your mother breakfast. That's right, get up early for Mother's Day, grab the skillet and whip up a delicious meal, complete with a vase filled with fresh flowers from the garden. If bacon and eggs aren't your specialty, give your mother a break from cooking and take over the kitchen for lunch or dinner. This is an affordable way to say “thanks for all you do”.

Clean the house- This year, give your mother the gift of TIME. Tell mom to park it on the couch this Mother's Day while you do the laundry, run the vacuum, do the dishes, take out the trash, and more. Surprise your mother by doing a few simple chores without making a big deal out of it. Believe me, mom is going to notice your hard work and she will be thankful for the free time she has been given.

Make a scrap book- Imagine the surprise on your mothers face when she opens that scrap book filled with all of those precious memories. She will love the fact that you took the time to put together this scrap book for her. Decorate it with hand prints or foot prints from you, the kids. Get creative and use paint, glitter, magic markers, or whatever to personalize the scrap book.

Take mom to her favorite place- It could be a restaurant, the book store, or the bowling alley. It could be even be Wal-Mart or the park. Wherever your mother likes to hang out, that is where you should take mom for her special day.

Create a family memory jar- Get a pretty vase type holder from a yard sale and fill it with memories you have had with your mother. Write down each one on a small piece of colored paper, and fold them each in quarters. Tie a pretty bow around the “vase” and call it a memory jar. Mom is sure to love and appreciate this wonderful Mother's Day gift.

No whining certificate- Give mom certificates that say for example “one day of no whining.” Then on another sheet of paper write “one night of doing dishes” and other helpful chores. These make a wonderful Mother's Day gift.

Help mom in the garden- To you and I, working in the garden is just work. However, some mothers love the time they spend in the garden. But sometimes it can be a huge task to undertake alone. Have a family day in the garden. Pick up her favorite flower seeds, buy inexpensive tools at Dollar General, Big Lots, etc. A half apron is easy to make using a sewing machine to put gloves, seed packets, and more in. Purchase a small window box and then place everything in the box like a gift basket. If your mother likes to hang out in the garden, this is a perfect gift for Mother's Day.

Home video- With gas prices so high, many of us will not be able to travel this year to see mom. We recommend putting together a home video and sending it to mom. Tape your son playing a baseball game and your daughters dance recital, for example and don't forget a message from you. Then send the video to your brother or sister if you have any and they can do the same. Once completed, send it off to mom just in time for her special day. It's much more economical than driving and it is a gift she will enjoy again and again.

Homemade Mother's Day card- Make a homemade card with a picture of you and your mother together.

Free car wash- Wash the car. Sounds simple, but giving mom a clean car for Mother's Day might just put a big smile on her face. Get your brothers and sisters to pitch in.

Make a phone call- Many of us will not be able to get home this year to see mom. No problem. Just pick up the phone and give her a call. She will be happy you did!
