Money Matters: Gas Saving Tips

Gas prices have been climbing over the past month, according to AAA the average price for a gallon of gas in Central Arkansas is $3.57.

In the money matters report we show you ways to reduce how much gas you consume, including a few ways you may have forgotten about.

As tempting as it might be right now that some additive or gadget will increase fuel efficiency. automotive experts say: don't fall for it !

Philip Reed with Edmunds.com says, "Frankly you are not going to see the huge boost in fuel economy that you would like to and that is available in other ways."

The old ways are still the most effective ways to increase fuel efficiency namely, adjusting your driving habits, like letting off the accelerator.

"High speeds are gas-wasters and it's particularly true over 70 mph because of the aerodynamics," Reed adds.

In fact, for each 5 miles per hour above 50, add a quarter to the cost of a gallon of gas.

He also says, it's truer now than ever before, that a car left running in idle is guzzling more than we realize.

"So, if you're actually going to be stationary for longer than 30 seconds or a minute, if you can safely do so, you should shut off the car engine," says Reed

Try walking, he says as opposed to the short drives because short drives are the most inefficient, and when buying gas, know whether high test is required for your vehicle or just recommended.

If it's merely recommended you could experiment with a lower grade of gasoline, either mid-grade or regular, and save quite a bit of money.

He says a reliable way to measure gas mileage is to do it yourself comparing the number of miles you get from one tankful to another.

AAA says relief at the pump is in the way. Apparently, the higher gas prices are the result of a slowdown at several refineries undergoing equipment upgrades. AAA says, that work should be completed in the coming weeks and falling gas prices are expected to follow.
