An officer with the Pea Ridge Police Department is hospitalized after being hit by a passing car as he worked at the scene of an accident.

It happened Thursday night around six o'clock on Highway 72 near Barris Lane.

Officer Joey Ferris had been dispatched to a one-vehicle accident and was on the roadside helping the driver out of a ditch when the other car hit him, according to Police Chief Tim Ledbetter.

Ledbetter could not comment on the extent of Ferris' injuries.

It's not yet known if any charges will be filed in the incident, which is under investigation by Arkansas State Police.
