Too Good to Eat?

Kids across the nation are giving healthy school food a failing grade.

Jon Stewart of "The Daily Show," says no one's surprised.

"Extra! Extra! Kids think school food sucks!" Steward said back in October.

Victoria Wray has three kids in elementary school, and tagged along on a field trip to the River Market Friday.

Wren says a little boy sitting next to her decided not to eat his school sack lunch, and she doesn't blame him?

"Would you eat this?" Wren said, holding up a warm bologna sandwich.

"I saw at least 30 lunch bags where I can guarantee the kids didn't eat more than 20 percent of it," Wren said.

The issue of school food came up at a legislative hearing Thursday.

State Education Commissioner Tom Kimbrell told lawmakers kids are throwing away massive amounts of food; a big issue since the USDA mandated healthier foods in schools last winter.

According to the new standards, schools have to: offer fruit and veggies every day, more whole grain foods, serve only fat-free or low-fat milk, limit calories based on age, and offer foods with less saturated fat, trans fat and sodium.

Comments

Are they going to do something about this? The calorie intake is too low and they don't take into consideration that some of these children are athletes and need a higher calorie intake.
