Baptist Health became the first hospital in Arkansas to perform a heart transplant 23 years ago.

On Wednesday, Baptist Health performed the 200th heart transplant since the program began in 1989.

Rodney Miller, 59, from White Hall received the 200th heart transplant in a seven-hour operation on Wednesday at Baptist Health Medical Center-Little Rock.

Miller was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy and was implanted with a HeartMate II ventricular assist device in March of 2010.  He has been on the transplant waiting list since Oct. 2010.

The HeartMate II device (heart pump) has served to support Mr. Miller's circulation and bridge him to a long-awaited heart transplant.

The heart transplant and removal of the HeartMate II pump was performed by Dr. John Ransom and Dr. Tom Rayburn. Dr. Ransom currently serves as the surgical director of the Baptist Health Heart Transplant Program and was part of the team that performed the state's first heart transplant in 1989.
