The UAPB Golden Lions play their conference championship in Birmingham Saturday, but for the community, it's about more than football. Win or or lose it's already lifted morale and given people something to celebrate.
"I'm excited for my team, I had to get a shirt to support them," said Andrea Jones.
The night before the SWAC championship Jones, a UAPB alum geared up to support her team all the way stopping at the University Shop.
It's every exciting whole town is cheering for then. Owners say the teams winning season on the field has boosted business and morale all over town, from students to community members.
"It's been wonderful, we're all excited. SWAC champions! " says student Claree James. "Everyone pulls together with school spirit, it's like a family."
"A lot of pride for our boys here in the community. Pine Bluff is a small town so it's a really good opportunity for us, so we're ready to see our boys represent us," said supporter Kelly Byus.
Even those without school ties, like Heart Care Clinic employees hope the team's success on the field outlasts game day glory.
"It's an opportunity to see us in a better light, and those who maybe wouldn't have even thought about Pine Bluff may come visit or even go to school here," said Clinic owner Dr. Lee Davis.
Fans hope the upswing and winning streak continues so they can be part of UAPB history.
"We're trying to get all the black and gold we can and pack this thing out so we can cheer them all the way," said Jones.
The Golden Lions play Jackson State Saturday, December 8th.
