NLR Runoff Election Has Some Voters Worried for Turnout

Election season is not over just yet. Voters still have a chance to make their voice heard in multiple run-off elections Tuesday.

Some excited voters however are concerned not every body shares their enthusiasm.

Normally the general consensus is that voter turnout drops for run-off elections. Voters in North Little Rock who will elect a mayor and city alderman want to make sure everyone's ready.

Dwight Callaham is gearing up for a crazy ride Tuesday night. "It'll be an exciting Tuesday night for us North Little Rockians." He just hopes everyone else has the same anticipation for the local run-off election in.

"I'm afraid," he said. "Normally these runoff elections aren't as well attended."

Going door to door however, as both campaigns did Sunday (11/25), left us with a different impression.

It may come as good news especially for a mayoral candidate hoping to turn the tables after a not so positive turnout for the general election.

"There's no doubt that on the sixth, my opponent did just a little bit better job than we did getting our supporters out," said Mayoral candidate, Joe Smith. "That's not going to happen in a runoff."

Smith stays hopeful after getting just 41 percent of the vote against his competitor, Tracy Steele's 49.

"We even got a theme," Steele said. "Let's do it again."

Both campaign efforts are still focusing on reminding voters in their city that there is a runoff.

"I think it will end up being pretty close," Callaham added.

Early voting picks back up tomorrow following the holiday break with election day on Tuesday.
