Back to school preps aren't just about shopping, they're also about making sure kids are healthy enough for the classroom.

One local group is giving families a boost, and that's good news for eager minds.

"Science and history...that's my favorite subjects."

Shaunee Gill and her grandmother were just some of the hundreds of families who turned out for a back-to-school jamboree Saturday.

The UALR Children International program hosts this event each year.

It offers kindergarten through fourth grade students a head start with everything from free health exams  to school supplies.

"We've had many requests for school supplies and school uniforms in the last few weeks. As families struggle for school it's always great to have some assistance there," UALR event coordinator, Cheryl Chapman said.

Kids must meet income requirements to be in this program and be enrolled at one of the participating schools in the Little Rock school district.
