An Opportunity - Linda
Blevins
The Susan G. Komen Race is an
opportunity to find the answer to eradicating breast cancer. In the meantime, it
is such a valuable tool in providing education, medical assistance and support
to those who have the disease. I suppose the most compelling reason to be a part
of the race are my dear friends who are SURVIVORS. My friend Suzette, who
graduated from high school with me, has been an inspiration in overcoming the
emotional and physical recovery from this disease. I was stunned by the news
that someone `my age` was a victim of this dreaded disease. Other close friends
like Barbara, Sandy (19 year survivor) and Sara (turned 80 years old this year)
are continuing to live vital lives. Another friend, Linda, is currently in
treatment and I plan to celebrate her 1st year of survival in the 2007 AR Komen
Race for the Cure. I always feel good after the race, thinking I have done a
small thing to support this cause, but when I watch the Survivors approaching
the finish line, I realize ""they are the ones"" that really have done a great
thing! There is no way to hold back the tears as you see a line of three
friends, two of which are holding up the middle person to help them make it
across the finish line! While it was the love of two sisters that started this
great cause, it still is compassion and love of family and friends that have
made it grown worldwide.
