Brain scans can help doctors predict whether elderly adults are at risk for falls. In a study of more than 600 elderly men and women, those with severe white matter damage were more likely to have problems walking and staying balanced and had a history of falls. Monitoring white matter changes can help doctors detect other conditions linked to walking problems, like dementia.
