Life event- The things that make up our lives can change drastically in the space of twelve months. A new baby or adoption, a divorce or entering retirement are all examples of this, and all of them merit a second look at your 1040.
Medical or healthcare expenses- When you suffer illness or injury that requires surgery, a hospital stay or multiple tests, many of the expenses are eligible for deduction. Make sure you have proper documentation and keep your tax preparer in the loop about it.
Check and check again- If your tax preparer finds that you haven't paid the IRS enough through 2012, make sure he or she has correct figures. Go back through all your receipts, check and double-check that you haven't accidentally left something out. It's like finding money when you're entitled to a bigger deduction than you originally thought, but it sometimes takes a little more effort.
