What is an electrophysiology study?

Electrophysiology (EP) studies are recording and stimulation studies used to evaluate the heart's conduction system and the presence of cardiac arrhythmias. EP studies are used to pinpoint the exact origin of localized (ectopic) arrhythmias, to find the location of cardiac conduction or block, and to assess the value of therapeutic drugs or devices for the treatment of arrhythmias. Results of EP studies indicate the most appropriate treatment: devices, drugs, ablation, or a combination thereof.
