LITTLE ROCK, AR - The State Board of Education (SBE) has voted to close Weiner High School in Poinsett County.

It was revealed in a hearing in Little Rock this morning that a review found decreased enrollment at Weiner High and increased educational opportunities in the Harrisburg School District.

The SBE heard from various Harrisburg and Weiner community members, including Representative Hutchinson, regarding the petition to close the Weiner High School (grades 7-12).

Members of the school board had said that they didn't like to be put in the position of making the decision.

The SBE's Brenda Gullett said it felt like a "family feud" they had to officiate.

With a 5-2 vote, the SBE moved to grant the Harrisburg School District's petition to close Weiner High.

On a related note, the school's Lady Cardinals girls basketball team came in second at the state high school basketball tournament this weekend.

A Weiner supporter at the ADE this morning called it "one last shining moment" for the school.
