LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Little Rock School Board has selected Dr. Dexter Suggs to be their next superintendent.

The vote was 6-1 in favor of Suggs.

Suggs comes from the Indianapolis Public School District. The other finalists for job were Dr. Connie Hathorn, Dr. Stefanie Phillips, and Dr. Walter Milton.

Suggs would replace Dr. Morris Holmes, who served as superintendent for the past two years after the board bought out the contract of Dr. Linda Watson. Although he was planning to leave at the end of the 2012-2013 school year, Holmes announced last week he would resign effective March 22nd.

Message from LRSD:

The Little Rock School District Board of Education announced the selection of Dr. Dexter Suggs, of Indianapolis, Indiana, as the District's new superintendent.

Dr. Suggs has served as the Chief of Staff for Indianapolis since July, 2012. His prior experience includes many facets of the educational process, including the positions of Chief Information Officer/Superintendent, Director of Operations and Communications, and principal in the 31,000 student Indianapolis district. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Milken National Educator Award.

"The Board is pleased to welcome Dr. Suggs to the Little Rock School District," said Dianne Curry, school board president. "We believe he has the talent, experience and commitment necessary to help our students achieve their full potential and to help us fulfill our mission of creating excellence for tomorrow."

"I think when you walk into some environments, you know it's home. This feels like home. I am really looking forward to working with the community, business leaders, churches, students, parents, and teachers in Little Rock," said Dr. Suggs.

Dr. Suggs holds a Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership from Indiana Wesleyan University, a Master of Education Administration Supervision from Indiana University-Purdue University, a master of Education in Curriculum/Instruction from Indiana Wesleyan University, and a Bachelor of Science in Fine Arts from Southern Illinois University.

Dr. Suggs will succeed Dr. Morris Holmes, who has served as LRSD's superintendent since January, 2011. The board is communicating with Dr. Suggs to make plans for his arrival.
