Arkansas Game & Fish Tracking Down Bear Population

Updated: March 1, 2013
Friday was a big day for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, as they spent the morning tracking down Arkansas' bear population.

The group headed out into the woods in the Ozarks Friday morning to find mama bears and their cubs.

The moms, of course, need to be put to sleep for a while for protection, and Game and Fish spent the morning tagging these bears so they can be tracked, which they say is vital.

"Bears have inherently low reproductive rates, but they're also a game animal, which means we have to keep very close tabs on what's coming into the population as well as what goes out of the population with our harvest data," says Myron Means, Statewide Black Bear Program Coordinator.

The Game and Fish Commission says about 2,000 bears are living in the Ozarks right now.
