Little Rock Crews Prepping for Winter Storm

Updated: February 20, 2013
City of Little Rock Public Works Operations crews started rotating 12-hour shifts Wednesday morning in anticipation of another winter storm event making its way through the Natural State.

The crews are also preparing all available snow and ice equipment so those machines will be ready to go if and when they are needed.

"The safety of Little Rock's residents is our highest priority. It takes precedence over all other aspects of our daily business," said City Manager Bruce Moore. "Being prepared for a weather event allows our staff to use their time and resources as efficiently as possible."

These Public Works Operations crews have recently been dedicating all of their time to storm debris collection. Following a FEMA declaration, the City was given the ability to hire an independent contractor to complete the curbside pickup of the fallen limbs and branches. The contractor will continue to collect storm debris and the City's Public Works crews will focus solely on maintaining safe thoroughfares.

When the Public Works Operations day shift is done at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, the night shift will then come in and work until Thursday morning.

Although the areas predicted to get the worst of the storm is north of Little Rock, the Public Works crews will use the full night shift and all 10 salt spreaders as needed. Public Works has plenty of sand and salt and has stockpiled material at the JE Davis and Thayer Street locations.
