A storm system moving east from southern Texas will bring moisture into Arkansas on Wednesday and Thursday. As an Arctic high moves into the western Great Lakes, cold air will be in place at the surface and temperatures expected to be near or below freezing in parts of central and northern Arkansas early Wednesday, some areas of western Arkansas could see a period of snow and/or sleet.
As the storm system strengthens Wednesday night and Thursday and draws in warmer air above the surface, a mixture of sleet and freezing rain is possible.
Early indications are that some areas of central and northern Arkansas could see significant accumulations of ice, in some cases approaching half an inch, which would lead to not only major travel problems but considerable power line and tree damage. >{? As is the case with the majority of ice storm events, even subtle changes in the track of the storm could have a large impact on the type of precipitation that falls.
Additionally, far south central and southeast Arkansas will briefly be in the storms warm sector and have a slight risk of severe thunderstorms Thursday with the most likely impact being damaging winds.
Needless to say, stay tuned to KARK, Your Weather Authority, for the latest on this developing storm system.
