Scientists say they've discovered a mechanism in the body that could lead to hay fever and other allergic reactions.
The key, they say, is a gene that appears to block cells that -- in healthy people -- allow the immune system to work normally -- and tolerate allergens without the sneezing and wheezing that so many of us experience. Now the goal is to figure out how to regulate that gene so it works properly - and let the immune system do its job.
Researchers hope the new finding might someday lead to new ways to treat allergies.
