President Barack Obama today declared a major disaster exists in the State of Arkansas and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by a severe winter storm during the period of December 25-26, 2012.
Federal funding is available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe winter storm in the counties of Garland, Grant, Hot Spring, Lonoke, Perry, Pulaski, and Saline.
Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.
W. Craig Fugate, Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, named Sandy Coachman as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area.
FEMA said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
U.S. Senator Mark Pryor released the following statement after the President granted Arkansas's request for a major disaster declaration for central Arkansas.
"This announcement is welcome news for Arkansans who are still struggling to recover from this winter's severe storms. Today's designation underscores why Congress should support legislation--like the Sandy Supplemental Disaster Assistance Appropriations bill--that provides funding for disaster relief and communities in need."
