NWS: Rain Expected to Transition to Snow Late This Afternoon

The National Weather Service updated its Christmas Day forecast around 6:30 a.m. Here's what they're expecting today:

"Rain will build over much of central and southern Arkansas this morning. Initially, moisture will encounter some subfreezing air from the Ouachita Mountains toward the Little Rock area. This may result in a period of freezing rain and icy conditions.

As the day progresses, precipitation will continue building into northern sections of the state. During the afternoon, rain will change to snow in much of the northwest half of the state. This will happen as colder air wraps around a storm system tracking from Texas to central Mississippi.

The changeover to snow will not occur across the southern and eastern counties until after dark.

Through dawn on the 26th, three to six inches of snow will be common, with six to ten inch amounts in the Ouachitas, and from the Little Rock (Pulaski County) area into northeast sections of the state. Northerly winds will become strong and gusty behind the departing system, with blowing and drifting snow.

Gusts over 40 mph will create blizzard conditions in the northeast. In the far northwest, dry air will keep accumulations to only one to three inches. Mild air over the southeast will limit snowfall, with similar accumulations in the forecast."
