One state lawmaker wants to allow Arkansas teachers to be trained as police and armed in the aftermath of the massacre of elementary school children in Connecticut.

Republican State Sen. Jeremy Hutchinson (District 22) says his proposal is part of his overall effort to put together a task force to take a comprehensive look at school safety in the Natural state.

Hutchinson says "deputizing" teachers would be strictly voluntary and might be necessary given the state and school districts do not have the money to pay for special duty police officers to be posted at schools.

The Connecticut shooting that left 30 dead has re-ignited the debate over guns in America.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors on Tuesday sent a letter to President Obama and Congress demanding a ban on assault weapons and urging them to pass more gun control laws to include banning high-capacity magazines and strengthening national background checks.
