President Barack Obama says he supports a renewal of the Assault Weapons Ban, effectively ending the sale of assault rifles and associated clips in the United States.

Gun buyers are snatching up assault rifles across Arkansas, and J.D. Belden at Cabot Gun and Ammo says they're going, going, nearly gone.

"I have five left, that's it," Belden said Tuesday afternoon. "And don't know when I can get any more."

Belden says the rush at his store started after the election and continued through black Friday, when the FBI did a record number of background checks. Then after the tragic shooting in Connecticut, Belden says sales hit a fever pitch.

"Assault rifles, any high capacity magazines, stuff like that," Belden said. "It's concern for a lot of people, so they're buying while they can. We're getting calls from people driving from two, three hours away to purchase a gun they can't find anywhere else."

Assault rifles are a hybrid of sorts, with the high clip capacity of a military rifle, but the single shot per trigger pull limitation of a hunting rifle.

Although people are buying, Belden isn't making bank on sales. He says it's more of a liquidation, and once his inventory is gone, he's not sure if he'll ever sell an assault rifle again.

"As a gun store owner, it's a scary thing because this is our livelihood," Belden said. "This is what we do, and a part of this market can be going away."

Possibly the last rounds in a gun control fight going back two decades.
